Limerick - The Hurling Hero's of '73 and Football Drama in 2004

Limerick haven't made it onto the big hurling stage too many times in recent years. They won the All Ireland Senior Hurling title in 1940 but had to wait until 1973 to win it again. And that was the last win though they did make the final 4 more times since then - 1974, 1980, 1994 and 1996. Appreciate the infamous day in '73 when they beat reigning champions Kilkenny in the final - with the distinctive voice of Micheal O'Hehir speaking so eloquently of great players like Richie Bennis, Eamon Cregan and that speech from Eamon Grimes.

The picture quality isn't great but Limerick fans won't care!

And how about Limerick footballers in 2004 v Kerry - So close and a game they should have won!

The replay in Killarney was never covered by TV cameras but wasn't to be for Limerick as Kerry won it 3-10 to 2-09.

Leitrim - The Glory of '94

Hyde Park. 24th July 1994. Leitrim capture their first Connacht title in 67 years (1927). It was an occasion of immense pride and celebration as team, under manager John O'Mahomy, defeated the managers home county and reigning Connacht champions Mayo. And, in fairness, it was a win that got great respect and scenees of celebration across all of the GAA world.

Laois - The O'Moore County Marvelous Minors !

The O'Moore county has had most of it's successes at minor football. They won their first All Ireland minor title in 1996 against Kerry. That team went on to win back-to-back titles by winning again in 1997 against a top class Tyrone side. Happy days !

At least 10 of those minors went on to play senior level and no doubt were key to success of senior team under Mick O'Dwyer from 2003 onwards. It's easy to forget that Laois have contested 4 Leinster Finals in the last 10 years when the legendary Mick O'Dwyer was in charge. That's the next best record to the Dubs. They may have registered 1 Leinster title in that period but it was a sweet one over neighbours Kildare in 2003. They were back again in the 2004 final and only lost after a replay to Westmeath.
But 2003 was the big year for Laois as not only did they capture a Leinster Senior title their minors took their 3rd All Ireland title beating Dublin in the final that year.
This is the proud moment for 2003 Leinster Champions.

Kilkenny - Records and Legends!

Hurling and Kilkenny belong in the same sentence. With 33 Senior All Ireland Titles they have 3 more than Cork and 7 more than Tipperary. And incredibly 1 more than the combined titles won by Limerick, Wexford, Galway, Dublin, Offaly, Clare and Waterford. And in the 2011 team just consider that Henry Shefflin, Eddie Brennan, Noel Hickey, Michael Kavanagh and Tommy Walsh have 39 medals between them.

Eddie Keher - A legend in a county of legends. A tribute to his goal from 1972.

Brian Cody - so much to consider for the man who has been in charge for over 13 years now. There are so many highlights but one that will always be fondly remembered was his "Do you think yourself it was a penalty Marty" from 2009.

Kildare - The First Team to Win Sam Maguire

Kildare won 4 All Ireland titles but hard to believe the last time was in 1928. One can only imagine what celebrations will be like when that gap is bridged.
The Lilywhites won the 1927 final against Kerry and repeated that win in 1928. And in so doing Kildare, in 1928, became the first team to win the newly commissioned All Ireland Trophy now know as Sam Maguire. We couldn't find any 1928 footage but this clip from 1926 showed how good Kildare were at that time. Kildare may have lost this 1926 final to Kerry after a replay but revenge was theirs in the next two.

Lets' move on 60 years to 1998 and the legendary Mick O'Dwyer takes Kildare to the All Ireland Final but failed to match Galway on the day. To get a flavour of that year however how about this late goal from Brian Murphy against Meath to secure the 1998 Leinster Title

Football Fortunes - Our Survey Says "Kerry".

If there was a question on Family Fortunes that went - "We asked 100 people what county do they associate most with Gaelic Football" The chances are that the top answer in "Our survey says" would be Kerry. The Kingdom. With 36 senior titles they are clearly in the No. 1 spot , 13 ahead of nearest rivals Dublin with 23. To select one or two clips that stand out in all that glory is hard, very hard. Great players, outstanding teams, superb skills. So much to consider but we will try to do it justice.

First up it's a real legend - one of the all time greats in Gaelic games Mick O'Connell. Now 75 years of age, he played senior football for Kerry for an unbelievable 17 years from 1956 to 1973. He was named in the GAA Football Team of the Century as one of an all Kerry midfield (the other being the legendry Jack O'Shea)

The second clip is from Kerry's highest scoring Final. They scored 5-11 and won by 17 points but that's not the only reason it's picked. It was of course the 1978 final in the great era of Kerry v The Dubs. It was a star studded Kerry team and at the top of their game - not to mention that audacious Mikey Sheehy goal against Paddy Cullen. And the first of a 4-in-a-row...

And we can't cover Kerry and not mention the great Mick O'Dwyer who has had such an iconic presence in Gaelic Football for over half a century - with so many counties as well as his native Kerry. And to vary the content away from the pitch action we pick a clip of him in a relaxed and entertaining interview ...

Galway - A True Dual County

Galway are the third most successful Football county with 9 Senior titles, behind Kerry and Dublin. There is a rich source of great football moments to pick from that but the one we selected is from their last win in 2000 and surely one of the best goals ever scored in Croke Park. Just follow the move from their own goal line to the rasping final shot from Declan Meehan. Magic stuff !

In hurling it's 4 senior titles. The first was in 1923 but the second didn't happen for another 57 years in 1980. That win in 1980 (over Limerick) was truly relished and has been celebrated ever since with the memory of that "Joe Connolly speech" and the singing of Joe McDonagh (later to become President of the GAA).

If you're from Galway you must surely feel the 'hair standing' !

Martin Carney Makes An Uncanny Prediction

It's RTE's Ger Canning and Martin Carney setting the scene for the 2011 All Ireland Football Final. Does Martin Carney make the prediction of the day or what?

Great call Mr. Carney!

Fermanagh - 2004 Glory and 2012 Expectations

CONTINUING 'YOUR COUNTY' ON VIDEO SERIES >>>>

we are at 'F' ....... and there's only the one Fermanagh!

Armagh may have been one of the favourites to win Sam in 2004 but Fermanagh didn't read the script when the counties met in the All Ireland Quarter Final in Croke Park. It was a win that shocked for sure but one that created great celebration not just in Fermanagh but resonated with GAA fans all over.

Result - Fermanagh 0-12 : Armagh 0-11

In 2012 Fermanagh have the legendary Peter Canavan in charge and hope that there will be many scores like this super goal from last years (2011) championship

2011 The Dubs Are Back !

CONTINUING 'YOUR COUNTY' ON VIDEO SERIES >>>>

It's last of the 'D's.......

Dublin now have 23 All Ireland Senior Football titles (after Kerry on 36) but 2011 has to be one of the most dramatic of them all - a true classic that it will take it's deserved place in GAA folklore.

Ok we have seen it all so many times but the final minutes still grabs the attention and stirs those giddy emotions that only sport can.

... but how did it look and feel to see it from Hill 16 ? An amateur clip that's a YouTube hit...

.... but as the players tell us it didn't just happen ! It's a mix hard work, a little bit of luck and never say die.

1960 Down Win And Sam Goes North For First Time

Down's All Ireland title of 1960 was a truly history win as it marked the first time that Sam Maguire went north of the border. And it was doubly memorable as they beat a great Kerry side to prove their worth.

...and appreciate the colour (well 2 : black and white)

In 1968 Down came back and repeated the win against the Kingdom.

1993 Derry Win Sam For The First Time

Derry beat Down (1991 and 1994 All Ireland Champions, Monaghan and Donegal (reigning All Ireland champions) to win the 1993 Ulster title. In the All Ireland semi they had a single point win over Dublin (15 to 14) and in the final the Oakleaf county overcame Cork 1-14 to 2-08.

The semi v Dublin was a thriller right up to the final whistle and Derry with stars like McNicholl, Brolly, Tohill, Gormley, Henry Downey (capt) and McGurk put in a massive performance in the closing stages. Watch out to for a youthful Dub named Pat Gilroy.

In the final Cork got off to a flier but Derry weren't to be denied their first title with a crucial goal from Seamus Downey in the first half and again Derry finished the stronger turning a 1 point deficit into a 3 point win and Sam went to Ulster for the third year in a row. What a day !

Donegal Delight from 1992 and 2011

in 1992 Donegal defied the odds and denied the Dubs to take the All Ireland Final - the first ever for Donegal.
Final score Donegal 0-18 Dublin 0-14.
Without doubt Donegals greatest day and probably celebrated all over the country bar Dublin (and maybe even some Dubs didn't begrudge them)

In 2011 the Dubs turned the tables on Donegal with a hard fought win in one of the most topical matches of the championship mainly for the clash of styles and tactics.
But it was the semi-final v Kildare that goes down as Donegals match of the year as they grabbed victory from the proverbial jaws of defeat. Indeed extra time was needed to decide a winner.

1990 Teddy McCarthy and the Rebels do the Double

In 1990 Cork did the double and Teddy McCarthy became the only player in the history of the GAA to win All Ireland senior hurling and football medals in the same year. Some feat!

In the hurling Cork defeated Galway with the massive scoreline of 5-15 to 2-21.

In the football it was also Corks year defeating Meath in the Final 0-11 to 0-09.

Cork v Meath rivalry dominated gaelic football in the late 80's and this win in 1990 was sweet revenge for the defeats of '87 and '88

1995 - Come on The Banner

1995 hurling was all about Clare and Ger Loughnane ..."scenes of absolute jubilation"...and Anthony Daly ....

On the way to this historic win Clare beat Cork and Limerick in the Munster championship, Galway in the All Ireland semi and then Offaly (who were reigning champions) in the final on a score 1-13 to 2-08.
It was a day of great passion and emotion and the curse of Biddy early was broken 81 years after their last win.

Cavan - A Proud Football County

Cavan may not have won much in recent years but they it's a county steeped in history and who's to say success can't happen again soon.
Remember their U21 team from 2011? They lost to Galway in the All Ireland final but in the semi final they recorded this impressive 1-10 to 0-08 win over a good Wexford side.

Parnell Park (Dublin) 18 April 2011 - and bear in mind this match took place just 3 days after they won the Ulster U21 title.

In 1995 their seniors made it to the Ulster Final after this exciting semi-final display against Monagahan, winning 1-9 to 0-10.

Unfortunately they lost the Ulster final to Tyrone that year.

And no mention of Cavan would be complete without referring to that most famous of All Ireland wins - 1947 in the Polo Grounds New York.

Result - Cavan 2-11 : Kerry 2-07

Carlow Have the Honour ...

Carlow may be one of the minnows in inter-county football but they have a claim to something in 2012 that no other county can take away .....
.... the honour of playing Dublin in their first competitive outing as All Ireland Champions.
McKenna Cup - Sunday 8 Jan 2012. Dr Cullen Park

It ended Dublin 0-17 : Carlow 0-10

And who says Carlow don't get into the winners enclosure.
Remember this famous win over a fancied Louth in the 2011 Leinster Quarter Final?

Armaghs Greatest Day 22 Sep 2002

Armagh 1-12 : Kerry 0-14
A title for the Orchard County by the minimum margin against the Kingdom. Sweet!

Armagh were back in their first final since back in 1977 when they lost to Dublin. But in the 2002 semi-final Armagh had revenge for '77 with the Dublin scalp - also by the narrowest of margins 1-14 to 1-13.
A great final day then day for Armagh and for captain Kieran McGeeney - even if he did have trouble with the victory speech part ..

Antrim Tipperary Hurling Final 1989

1989 Hurling Final - Antrim v Tipperary.
Full match - who needs Netflix!

Antrim make the All Ireland final in 1989 - their last appearance was 43 years earlier in 1946. Their opponents Tipperary who, unbelievably, hadn't won a title in 18 years, not since 1971.

Hurling made big headlines in 1989, dominated by the Tony Keady affair. Keady was banned by the GAA after being found 'guilty' of playing illegally in an exhibition match in New York. Then Antrim beat a fancied Offaly in the semi-final and a dream spot in the final.
But the final part of the fairytale didn't happen as Tipp were decisive winners 4-24 to 3-09.
