Dublin v Tyrone 2011 - Performance of the Season

All Ireland Quarter Final 6 Aug 2011

Dublin had bowed to Tyrone so many times in recent years. But not in 2011 as they turned on the style and the swaggger. It was an outstanding team performance and Dublin and a terrific individual contribution, on the day, from Diarmuid Connolly.

Mayo v Cork 2011 - Upset of the Season

All Ireland Quarter Final 31 July 2011

Cork are reigning champions and Mayo come into this game as complete underdogs and the tag seems justified as Cork get off to a flying start. But James Horan's team hadn't read the script and in a thrilling performance confounded the pundits. Witness the upset of the season.

Donegal v Kildare 2011 - A Resilient Display

All Ireland Quarter Final 30 July 2011
A match that either team could have won.

This game started slow and the first half was a dreary defensive affair. But the second half came alive as the match swung one way and then the other, eventually needing extra time to decide a winner. What began as a forgettable affair ended up as one of the most memorable contests of the championship.

Joe Connolly 1980 - That Famous Speech

Galway Hurling needs to get it's mojo back to days like this!

In 1980 Joe Connolly led Galway to it's first All Ireland Hurling title in 57 years (since 1923) and his speech afterwards is often cited as one of the great moments in GAA. It had passion and emotion - and still has! And it wasn't just the speech that tugged at the heartstrings but the finale as Joe McDonagh takes over to belt out "The West's Awake".

1961 - Record Attendance of 90556 see Down Win

1961 - Down 3-06 : Offaly 2-08
From 50 years ago this year this final holds the record of the highest attendance in Croke Park - about 8,000 more than current capacity.

Down were reigning champions while Offaly were in their first ever final and it was a terrific match with the great Down stars of the era, Sean O'Neill and captain Paddy Doherty, making the difference.
Watch out for a terrific Offaly goal from Mick Casey and that 'penalty' they didn't get. Major bad decisions back then also !!
and finally, appreciate the quality colour in this video. It was originally black and white but amazing what film technology can do.

The Gooch Show from 2007 Kerry v Cork AIFinal

Cavan v Kerry Polo Grounds NY 1947

1947 Cavan and Kerry All Irealnd Final from the Polo Grounds New York. Why was it played in New York - simply a motion to stage it in NY was put forward to Central Council by Clare delegates, it was discussed and passed.
"The teams spent the remainder of the week training. On the day of the Final, Sunday 14th September, the entire party attended High Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The two teams arrived at the Polo Grounds at 2pm. At 2.40pm the officials and teams took to the field to a tremendous reception. The teams marched into position and stood facing the flags of the two nations while the Police Band played ‘Faith of Our Fathers’ and both National Anthems. Mayor O’Dwyer started the game. In his final report Ă“ Caoimh called it a ‘game that will live forever in the memory of those privileged to witness it, a magnificent exhibition of Gaelic football at its best’. The final result was Cavan 2-11, Kerry 2-07"

GAA on Treasure Island

This is not the fictional Treasure Island but a real place in San Francisco.
And that is where the GAA opened an impressive new ground in 2008. It's a 12 acre site on an island in San Francisco Bay and as the videos of the opening ceremony show .... well that's what Presidents do !!!

Cork v Tipp 1984 - A Classic Munster Final

1984 was centenary year for the GAA and to mark the event the GAA even played the All Ireland Hurling Final in Semple Stadium. Cork beat Offaly in the final but it was the Munster final of that year, between Cork and Tipp, that provided the classic game.
It was Munster Final hurling at its best - hard, passionate, commitment, skill and drama as these two great teams battled it out to the end - literally.
