Joe Canning - A Little Bit of Magic

This is a piece of action that has been mentioned to us quite a bit since we started requesting suggestions and feedback for the site. Glad to oblige as it merits an apprection.

It was Galway v Cork in Phase 3 of the 2011 hurling qualifiers on Saturday 9th July, in The Gaelic Grounds. This quick thinking and perfectly executed piece of indivual skill from Joe Canning stands out as one of the best moments in the 2011 championship.
Galway won 2-13 to 1-14 but that's as far as it went for Galway in the campaign as they lost out by 10 points to Waterford in the Quarter Final.

On This Day 1964 - Triumph and Tragedy for Galway

On this date in 1964 (27 Sep) there was was both triumph and tragedy in Galway football. They won the first of their 3-in-a-row All Irelands with the legendry John Donnellan as captain, beating Kerry 0-15 to 0-10. However, the victory was tinged with sad news that day for the Donnellan family as John's father, Mick, (also an All Ireland winner in the 20,s and 30's) suffered a heart attack, in Croke Park, during the match and died. His son John didn't know this when he lifted the cup.
John's brother Pat also played that day and John's son Michael was also an All Ireland winner with Galway in 1998.

Terrific Point On The Volley - Cavan v Donegal 1992

1992 - This outstanding piece of skill from Damian O'Reilly of Cavan deserves it's place on this site and a 'like' click from visitors surely! He hits a lobbed ball on the volley, from a difficult angle, and hooks it over the bar. Terrific!
It was the Ulster Championship Quarter Final of 1992. Though Donegal went on to win Ulster and the All Ireland that year it could have been different as they were pushed to the pin of their collar in this QF game against Cavan which ended in a hard fought draw at 1-15 each. In the replay Donegal had a decisive win.

Dublin v ??? - The Farce of 1987

Dublin v Cork - 1987 National League Quarter Final.
The teams were all square at the end of normal time. Both teams retire to their dressing room but only Dublin re-appear for the extra time. Cork (some misunderstanding or strange decision) stay in the dressing room. The ref decides to restart with Dublin facing no opposition. Rumour has it that the Cork players were getting on the bus as Barney Rock scores the easiest goal of his life and Dublin win the match.
Cork subsequently lodged a protest but was rejected.
Dublin go on to win the League

Ashley Young, Jermain Defoe, and Roman Pavlyuchenko playing GAA

Gaelic Trick Shots - Cud Ya?

25 Sep 2011

Meath 2011 - Unbelievable Skills !!
Be amazed at the skills in these trick shots with a gaelic football. Performed by Meath lads Caolan and Fiachra Ward (brothers of Meath star Cian Ward) and filmed recently, taking about 3 weeks I gather.
It's so impressive you will probably want to watch it again just to see if it's clever camera work or the real thing. It's the real thing !

Brian Dooher - Some Player !

23 Sep 2011

BRIAN DOOHER from 2008
Today, one of the greatest and most whole-hearted players of recent years has announced his retirement from inter-county football - Tyrone's Brian Dooher.
He has toiled for his county for 16 years since 1995 and captained Tyrone in both 2005 and 2008 winning finals - one of very few players to have the honour of lifting Sam Maguire twice.
Highly respected throughout the entire GAA world but his abscence will, without doubt, be missed most in Tyrone.
This clip is just one great tribute moment to what he did best and a proud captain lifting Sam.

Kilkenny Beat Tipp in 1922

22 Sep 2011
KILKENNY Win in 1922 captained by one Wattie Dunphy
Clicking on the image takes you to the Pathe video clip

Thanks to the archive research skills of WilieJoe
a hidden treasure of old GAA video clips from the early 1920's have been unearthed online.
This, the 1922 hurling final is one of the oldest and featured the 2011 All Ireland hurling finalists, Kilkenny and Tipp. Kilkenny won 4-02 to 2-06.
Kilkenny were captained by the unusually named Wattie Dunphy, who in fact was the goalkeeper that day - and Wattie in case you haven't guessed is Walter ! Funny thing was that Kilkenny didn't beat Tipp again in the championship for the next 45 years!
Here are the 2 teams from that final
Kilkenny
Walter Dunphy (capt.), Ed. Dunphy, M. McDonald (goal), John Holohan, Jas. Tobin, Thos. Carroll, Richard Grace, Wm. Kenny, Patk. Glendon, Pat Aylward, Martin Lawlor, John Roberts, Pat Donohoe, Matty Power, Richard Tobin.
Tipperary
J. Leahy, (capt.), J. Power, A. O'Donnell, P. Power, P. Browne, J. Cleary, M. Kennedy, S. Hackett, J. O'Meara, J. J. Hayes, P. Spillane, J. Fitzpatrick, T. Dwan, W. Dwan, J. Darcy.

1924 - Must be The Oldest GAA Video Online. Is it ?

21 Sep 2011
ALL IRELAND FOOTBALL FINAL FROM 1924 Dublin v Kerry
Clicking on the image below will redirect to the video source on Pathe.

Great old silent clip in black and white ... and watch for the players caps and the goalkeeper is his stylish trilby hat !
Played on Sunday 28 Sep 1924 to be exact but it wasn't the 1924 final, it was in fact the end of the 1923 championship. The Civil War had an impact on completing fixtures back around those years, so a delay like that wasn't unusual.

The match itself, between Dublin and Kerry, was played in Croke Park in front of 18,500 - quite a few less than last Sundays 2011 epic but the result was similar as Dublin won on a score of 1-5 to 1-3.

Thanks to @WillieJoe for the heads up on this one

Cluxtons Point & Final Whistle - Seen From Hill16

21 Sep 2011

This is a brilliant clip. Anyone in Croke last Sunday witnessing live the drama of Dublin win over Kerry will know what a buzz there was, especially the final few moments. But not everyone got to experience those final moments from the hotbed of Hill16. This amateur clip catches it ... the first surge of excitment as Cluxton scores, followed quickly by a second surge as the final whistle goes and then the reality of having won takes over. It was loud ! It was happy ! And it was emotional !!!

Is This the Oldest Video Clip of GAA ?

Silent Movies from 1926 as Kerry play Kildare.

The 1926 Football Finalists were Kerry and Kildare. This match in the clip was played on 6th Sep (a Monday) and ended in a draw : Kerry 1-03 Kildare 0-06. A last minute point by Bill Gorman (Kerry) forced the draw. After the game, Kerry's centre back Jack Murphy put his clothes back on without taking off his playing gear, and died of pneumonia before the replay on 17th October (a Sunday) which Kerry won 1-04 to 0-04

The Drama Of The Last 4 minutes
Well anyone that was lucky enough to be there in Croke Park yesterday to witness one of the most dramatic All Ireland Football Finals in years will still be on a high from the sheer tension and excitment at the end - and the celebrations by the 'blues'.
..... And even if you weren't there it was just as exciting as it gets.
.........And if you missed it altogether then here's a piece of it just to get a flavour!

Dublin 1995 - Last Final and Last Title Win

17 Sep 2011

In 1995 who would have thought that it would take 16 years for Dublin reach their next final? In that time theyhave battled hard and failed but make it - sometimes unluckily and often on the narrowest of margins. But they're back in 2011.
In 1995 it all looked so promising as Dublin overcame Tyrone in the final. But theyhad to fight to the end and eventaully survived the Tyrone push to win by just a single point 1-10 to 0-12. Indeed Tyrone had a late equalling point disallowed. Scary stuff ut the Dubs held on by the proverbial 'skin of their teeth' and were the ones celebrating.

Kerry 2009 - Last Final and Last Title Win

17 Sep 2010

The Kerry record of appearing in finals is amazing - they have played in 26 of the last 50 Finals and won 17 of them. Their last win was just 2 years ago, in 2009, against arch rivals Cork.
Having lost to Cork in teh Munster Championship the Kerry team were out for revenge in the final and they got it with a final score of 0-16 to 1-09

Kerry and Dublin - Their Last Final in 1985

16 Sep 2011

Well they are just days away from their head to head in the 2011 All Ireland Football Final. Hard to believe that the last time they met in the final was 26 years ago in 1985 and on that day Kerry came out tops again having also beaten Dublin in the previous years final.
In the 1985 final Kerry were well in command with a 9 point advantage at one stage. But Dublin fought back hard in the second half and what seemed like another esay title for Kerry turned in to a real thriller and just a few minutes from the end Dublin were just 2 points down. But Kerry weathered the storm and it was they who scored the last 2 points.
The Final score in 1985 Kerry 2-12 : Dublin 2-08

Pat Gilroy Playing His Part in 1995 Final

14 Sep 2011

On Sunday next Pat Gilroy will be the first Dublin manager to steer the county to a senior final since 1995. They won that year of course and Pat himself came on as a sub in that final. I'm sure he's hoping to achieve the player and manager double.
And watch for a young Jason Sherlock with a distintive hairstyle !!

All Ireland Football Semi-Final 1977, Dublin v Kerry

12 Sep 2011
Was this the best football match ever?

Many say that it was but it's always debatable. It certainly was the best match between the legendry Kerry and Dublin teams of the late 70's. They dominated football at the time and both teams were adorned with some of the most talented players galeic football has ever seen. And add to that the fact that the opposing teams also had managers who were, without question, the best we have seen. Kevin Heffernan brought Dublin football from the doldrums to a top class team, individually and collectively, while the managerial exploits of Kerryman Mick O'Dwyer need no embelishing in this blog.

There was great rivalry between these 2 great sides but also great respect and the 1977 semi-final, regardless of whether it is the debatable best game ever, will always be regarded as the best clash of two magnificent teams.

The Skill of the Swerve Kick

8 Sep 2011

It's one of the hardest and therefore one of the most imprsssive skills in gaelic football - yes the swerve kick. A long pass or shot with the outside of the boot and watching the curved trajectory of the ball is something to behold. We have seen some great examples of it over the years but the players in this clip are, without doubt, masters in the 'swerve' class.

2011 - Will It Be the Dubs Year?

6 Sep 2009

Dublin have had any number of heartbreaks over the past few years in the quest to get back to the All Ireland Final for the first time since 1995. Kerry, Cork, Mayo, Tyrone... they have all proved a step too far for recent Dublin teams but Pat Gilroy has steered the ship expertly in 2011 and they have got there.
Just one more step to go but can they do it against the All Ireland Final specialists - Kerry?

Dublin Win Sam in 1963

5 Sep 2011

Galway, famously, won 3 in-a-row in 1964, 1965 and 1966 and it might have been 4 if Dublin hadn't denied them in the 1963 Final.
This is a terrific clip (even if a bit 'amusing' in the commentary) of the 63 match. Something to get the Dubs 2011 pre-final hunger pangs going!

Kilkenny Champs 2011

5 Sep 2011
Tipperary must have wounded the Cats badly in 2010 because Kilkenny hit the big stage of Croke Park yesterday like men on a single mission. They led all the way from start to finish in this years Final and though credit to Tipp for never giving up til the final whistle the Kilkenny hunger to avenge 2010 was plain to see.
This clip of RTE News highlights has already hit YouTube.

New York Ladies Qualify for All Ireland Junior Final

Sat 3 Sep
Gaa chat today is dominated by Kilkenny and Tipperary on the eve of the All Ireland Hurling Final but a wee story and short new video clip to show that GAA isn't just about senior hurling or football, nor even a game for men only, nor is it confined to 32 counties.
New York Ladies today qualified for The Ladies All Ireland Junior Football Final. Well done. This is new clip of their preparation and dedication.

Kilkenny 2009, Tipperary 2010. Who Will Celebrate 2011?

2011 is the first time the same two counties have met in the All Ireland Hurling Final for the third year in a row. In 2009 it was Kilkenny who celebrated at the final whistle (something they were making a habit of!). In 2010 it was Tipperary's turned the table and it was their turn to celebrate and lift Liam McCarthy ! So who will fill the chapter for 2011?

A brand new clip of the celebrations after the final whistle ....

Hurling in Hollywood ?? Never !!! But yes ....

It's a reasonable gamble that most us don't know that hurling once upon a time featured in Hollywood. And before you say 'ah , that's trick it's probably a Hollywood in County Down" we are talking here about THE Hollywood. And it's a movie clip that's sometimes known as "Athletic Manslaughter" ,..... Google it!

A fantastic clip which the voice over describes hurling as an old Irish game where you "sock a ball with the pretty club or bat or shillelagh.."  - Sure, where would you get it but Hollywood ?
