Hurling - Cracking Save by Galways Callinan

The action is so fast it's hard to see the 'sliotar' and makes you appreciate, even more, the super fast reflexes of Colm Callinan. The shot is hit from such short distance and from point blank range by Wexfords Rory Jacob and I bet he couldn't believe it didn't hit the back of the net.
Gotta watch the slow-mo replay to fully take in the quality of the save.
Superb!

In 94 he was 17.

Padraic Joyce. Doing what he has done so many times since. This was in the All Ireland Minor Final of 1994. No medal that day though as Kerry won on a score Kerry 0-16 : Galway 1-07

Was This The Most Contoversial Point of 2011?

Dublin win a 'soft' free in the dying seconds of the Leinster Semi-Final and from it score the winning point. It was certainly controversial and maybe it was just as important in the destiny of the 2011 championship as Cluxtons point in the final itself.
Was it a free ? Was the referee wrong to award a 'gimme' in the circumstances ? One thing it was, without question, is harsh on Kildare.

Effin Eddie - The Old Ones Are The Best

Effin Eddie - Did I hear you saying who? Where have you been for the last 20 years?
This is a piece of footage from a recording that long pre-dates Youtube or the Internet - 1993 to be precise.
If Effin Eddie Moroney is new to you then suggest you first view the clip and then visit the website http://www.effineddie.ie/ where you can even buy the full length version.
On the other hand, if Effin Eddie is not new to you then suggest you first view the clip and then visit the website http://www.effineddie.ie/ where you can even buy the full length version.

There are quite a few clips online but this is the best and dare you not to laugh no matter how many times you watch it.

The Sunday Game Poster Boy - Michael Lyster : Only a Boy !

The long time GAA presenter Michael Lyster in the early days - I think this is 1986 so this youthful lad presenting Sports Stadium was just 28 looking more like 18 !!!

Great rallying action as well.

The Bertie Fisher (RIP) incident he refers too was this one

Scary !

Armagh - The Ultimate Comeback in 2002

We all know that Armagh beat Kerry in the 2002 All Ireland Football Final but it's worth remembering how they won it - dramatically turning a 4 point deficit into 1 point win and holding on for wild celebrations.
With about 16 minutes to go Kerry were 4 points ahead 0-14 to 0-10. Then Armagh upped a gear. Oisin McConville finished a great move with a neat near-post shot into the back of the net. Then Ronan Clarke added a superb point to draw the sides level and the reliable Steven McDonnell knocked over what turned out to be the winning point. So in the last 15 minutes Armagh kept Kerry scoreless while scoring 1-2 and win by a single point 1-12 to 0-14.

Man U v Man City - What A Save ! What A Commentary!

A diversion today from GAA for a smashing video clip of Man U v Man City last year. Can't decide what makes it great - is it watching Joe Hart or listening to the Arab commentator? Or both.

Bartley Madden - Boxing in Croke Park 1923

Croke Park was the stage for quite a few boxing matches back in the 1920's and one man to feature there on 2 occasions was heavyweight pro Bartley Madden. He was born in Caltra in Galway in 1890 but lived mostly in Roscommon and the story goes that he was quite a good footballer and played for Roscommon in Connacht Championship winning teams back then - unable so far to confirm this but Roscommon did win Connacht titles in 1912 and 1914 at which time Bartley would have been 22-24 years old so just about tallies. And it appears he may also have played for Connacht at provincial level.
At some stage he moved to New York as a base for his boxing career, at heavy weight and fought some of the top fighters of the time including world champion Gene Tunney.
But in 1930 it was tragedy. First his wife died and a few weeks later on 5 March 1930 Madden himself, aged 39 but not retired from boxing, died after a fall down some steps in Washington.
His boxing record shows he had about 70 pro fights between 1912 and 1929 (his last fight was 23 Dec 1929, winning 39, losing 25 and 6 were drawn contests(?). Looks like he had 2 fights in Croke Park - this one in 1923 , which he won on a KO, and another in 1926 against Tom Heeney (New Zealand) which he lost on points.
Some Bio on Bartley Madden - any additional info that our readers can be provided will be appreciated.

Cluxton's Point from Another Angle

That famous point as seen from another angle - not much more to be added but take note Cluxton has actually turned and started to race back to goals before the ball goes over the bar.
Happy fans or what ?

Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh - Legend

Micheál lit up many a Sunday and often it was that turn of phrase, a witty remark, a bit of trivia about a player (or maybe the players mothers cousin once removed). His passion for the GAA is legendry and this clip demonstrates just how passionate and animated he was when in flow flow ... retired but not forgotten.

Waterfords Munster Breakthrough 2002

Waterford had waited a long time to make a major impact in Munster hurling - in fact their last Munster title pror to this stretched way back to 1963. So their win in 2002 against Tipperary was special and a joyous one for players and fans. On that day some players that have since become household names came to the big stage - one being John Mullane.

James McCartan Superb Point for Down v Derry 1994

This clip is just one of the superb moments from a match that is regarded as one of the all time classics in gaelic football.

It’s the first round of the 1994 Ulster Championship. Derry are reigning Ulster and All-Ireland champions and with stars like Joe Brolly, Anthony Tohill and Henry Downey they are hotly tipped to retain both titles. But Down have other ideas and their own stars such as Mickey Linden, James McCartan, Greg Blaney and Ross Carr. The clash of the big two, with home advantage to Derry in CelticPark, this game turned out to be a classic with Down eventually emerging with the scalp of the All Ireland Champions and going on to win the '94 All Ireland title. James McCartan was just one of the hero's ....

Hurling In The USA - Awesome !

There was  a recent story of the US Military forming a hurling team shows how hurling is attracting players with little or no direct Irish background. But it's not just the military in the USA are attracted to the game as this clip demonstrates. Note the reference to the California Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association - quite a mouthful - this is their website . And in true American lingo it's predictable described as 'awesome' - which it is !

Hurling Skill - the Perfect Sideline Cut?

Appreciate the techique of the sideline cut in slow motion

Players like Joe canning make it look easy but the brilliant camera work and close up slow motion shows just how much skill there is in perfecting the sideline cut. On a par (pardon the pun) if not more difficult than a golf swing .

All Ireland Final Day 1978 - No Ticket ! A Ladder Will Do !

1978 - All Ireland Final Day - Mayo Minors Amazing Comeback. And No Ticket? No Problem!

The Kerry v Dublin senior final of 1978 ended up as in an easy 17 point Kerry win but the Minor final that year was a thriller. With 6 minutes to go Mayo trailed Dublin by 5 points and looked all over. But an amazing late burst of scoring saw Mayo hit the back of the Dublin net 3 times and and the game ended with Mayo winning by 4 points. An amazing comeback and turnaround and for Mayo fans the hero was tall supersub Tom Byrne who scored 2 (and missed another).
The clip is also worth watching to see ticketless fans scaling the Hill 16 wall with the aid of a handy ladder while the 'garda' inside look the other way (2 shots one near the start and a better one near the end).
Those were the days !!
